Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
On the 20th of February 2021, a United Boeing 777-200, registration N772UA performing flight UA-328 from Denver,CO to Honolulu,HI (USA) with 231 passengers and 10 crew, was in the initial climb out of Denver's runway 25 when the right hand engine's (PW4077) inlet separated associated with the failure of the engine. The crew declared Mayday reporting an engine failure. The aircraft stopped the climb at about 13000 feet, the crew requested to return to Denver after running the checklists. ATC offered any runway, they would make it happen. The aircraft returned to Denver for a safe landing on runway 26 about 23 minutes after departure. The aircraft stopped on the runway for a check by emergency services. Emergency services advised of an active fire within the right hand engine and extinguished the fire a few minutes later. The aircraft was subsequently towed off the runway to a remote parking stand, where passengers disembarked and were bussed to the terminal. There were no injuries.
The engine inlet fell into the neighbourhood of Broomfield,CO, located about 16nm west of Denver near 13th and Elmwood Street, the debris also struck through the roof of an adjacent house.
Broomfield police reported that although debris impacted the neighbourhood and damaged a number of homes, there were no injuries on the ground. The debris field expands over a nautical mile.
Ground observers reported hearing the sound of an explosion like bang, smoke and saw the debris falling down. The aircraft continued flying.

Thank God this happened over land. Non-stop to Hawaii is 4 hours between California and Hawaii. Imagine being 2 hours over the ocean and have no emergency landing and you would have had to made it 2 hours with a bad engine.

    2. Fantasy Deo

But I think he could have landed earlier by making a u turn.

    3. Circuit Monkey

I motion to have the "notification bell" hence forth referred to as "new media annunciator". And your welcome.

This is the one exception for clapping when the plane lands

      great review!

0:14 Bit wobbly, but she'll be right, mate!

    7. phil common

Great analysis. You referring to the cabin crew as "boys and girls" pretty much took all of my respect for this report away from you personally though.

    8. Joshua Erenberg

      Most unenthusiastic mayday ever

    9. J

Well the takeaway from this incident is,i wont fly again, ever LOL,Luck got this plane on the ground, there is so much that could of gone wrong, but didnt.

    10. Lemon Squeezer

I would just try turning it on and off

    11. pugmahone666

its BROOMFIELD not bloomfield!! Broomfield Colorado. I live in CO and he got that portion wrong!

    12. Stephen Lediard

Serious though the situation was, this was surely a Pan Pan call and not a Mayday. Mayday is for when a ship or aircraft is going down.

    13. Guy Siddons

The pilot initially called Mayday but wasn't heard by ATC. The pilot should have called Mayday 3 times, with his callsign, then a further Mayday. That was worked out years ago to try to avoid the situation here where the abbreviated form wasn't heard initially. It didn't affect the outcome here but that initial call is vital to get everyone's attention and really shouldn't have been abbrerviated.

I admire your lectures. Very simple and straight forward and a good instructor.

Unfortunately, U.S.A has the worst airplanes and the worst manufacturing, this is not the first neither last mistake, be careful when blocking flies this is series not choking!

    20. Justin Hopkins

She’s the fourth 777 delivered to United Airlines.

    21. Deutschland Über Alles

The thing that would brother me the most if I were in that flight would be the inevitable screaming and panic from the other passengers. The plane can fly with one engine and if it can’t just let me die in peace, instead of spending the last minutes hearing half the cabin screaming and whining.

    22. Tom Gibbons

Great video! Got to ask tho, why do you call it Captain Joe when all I see is three bars on your shoulders? Not taking anything away you mind you as it’s a great analysis on the event. Good job!

    23. Seth

Love the breakdown. Thanks. What is the call handle "heavy" mean?

    24. Z32 Nissan

I always dreamed to be a pilot. Great job team 👏

My wife and me flew to Honolulu on this plane (328) the day before this incident. we were sitting right next to this engine and I had the window seat. I watched this engine shaking. The intake cone was vibrating again'st the main housing of the engine. I figure the shaking was just from wind drag and turbulence. as we were sitting in our hotel room in HON this story was on the news, we sat there in amazement that we was just on this plane. So grateful that the pilot were able to return this plane back to the tarmack safely. Close calls.

nice spotting I did not see the broken blade! that explains!! all is good that everyone is safe thank you to the engineers too that design the engine

    35. Mackinstyle

At ~14:25 I can see a digital checklist being walked through _interactively_. It looks like it's an actual display, behind the throttle. Is this real? Is this part of a Simulator only? Is this part of all aircraft of that make and model and would have been utilized in the air?

    36. Graziano Belnome

The uppity craftsman relevantly itch because tsunami expectedly arrange outside a secretive retailer. nonchalant, selective net

    37. Checkmate

What striked me at the very first glance when you where reading out the memory items is how well placed those items are actually. Each item is located further "down" the cockpit on a single axis with minimal offset (A/T). You move from the glareshield at the top down to the fire extinguishers at the very bottom. I think its safe to say it is by design and shows how much work gets put into cockpit ergonomics - even (or especially?) for such instances. Its something you(me, as aviationenthusiast but not pilot) would rarely notice. Frankly speaking its mind blowing to me.

    38. Badgerbollocks

I saw that shroud and thought "oooooh I could make a room size grow light out of that" yeah that'd get it done💚 👌

    39. RJ Mostwanted

I'm surprised the pilot didn't dump any fuel

Capt. Joe what do you know about AAL2292 that had the close encounter with UFO over NM?

    46. Johann Pröll

that shows that well trained pilots are indispensable on aircrafts. forget about automatic flown aircrafts.

United airlines mustn’t do any maintenance

    49. Sean Oberholzer

Oh my God! I live 20 minutes from where the inlet landed! I'd heard about this and seen pictures but didn't know it was so close to me. (BTW it's BRoomfield, not BLoomfield)

    50. The Bearded Brother

So we're not going to talk about the fact they were headed to Hawaii, and if they'd gotten off the mainland and this had happened they'd be stranded!? 😦

    51. DrugTalk 101

5:55 they already were close to the mountains intact the engine ring landed right next to the Rocky Mountains in the foothills in BROOMfield not BLOOM LOL 😂 I live around the corner from were the engine ring thing landed! And we’re a 15 min drive from the mountains so a 1-2 min flight

    52. Keith Horowitz

It was interesting to see the plane fly around to what looked like the furthest runway. I'm not sure it was only checklist as the reason for going that far around. The approach to Denver airport 26 that the pilot took is mostly over fields. All the other approaches have much, much higher population densities. Kudos to the pilot for taking the route in that also considered the lowest potential for ground injury if anything were to get much worse on approach.

    53. lostindixie

A FedEx plane lost an engine cowling in a Memphis neighborhood, yet it couldn't be found. The wife saw it in the front yard, thought it was something her husband brought home, and dragged it into the garage.

    54. Joshua Moore

They need to make that ring around the main fan blades kevlar, maybe with ceramic and kevlar. A level IV armor ring of Kevlar and ceramic to prevent casualties and extra damage to the aircraft!

    55. KellyClarkson3

The engine shut down checklist is a read from a quick reference card (QRC) NOT from memory. Actions like these require the other pilot to confirm correct lever or switch is being moved, not just a sequence run from memory. The flying pilot would also guard the adjacent controls for "good engine" with hand to prevent pilot running checklist from potentially shutting down wrong motor.

    56. Ray Garza

It already happened cuz is 2021

    57. gregfox

War Thunder taught me not to turn into a dead engine

    58. Melanie Rogal

This was a good explanation until the end "this is why we need a two man cockpit". This is 2021. Women have been pilots for a very long time now. Unlearned comments such as these is why women make up 5% of all pilots, and continues to decrease as we have moved forward in most all other industries except aviation.

    59. Bogdan Paul

      With best wishes as always...

    60. D Hann

As a professional airline pilot for 30 years. Nice video. Well done.

    62. Mike Goodell

excellent explanation- as a Quality Manager/ Engineer/Inspector in aviation for many years, we all do, all of us, put safety first- but Boeing has its work cut out to make everyone feel that way- real quick, especially after the 737 Max total breakdown...

    63. zijuiy wttuy

I'm very surprised the passengers did not panic after looking out the windows and seeing in horror their engine mangled and in flames.

    79. chilitoday

This is a great video. Q. How far can the plane fly on one engine, at that speed and altitude? And could not return to the departure airport. Also, Was a fuel dump called for here?

    80. bertfella365

Awesome summary Joe, and awesome pilots flying!

    81. mschmidt62

Girls and boys? Is that what flight crew call cabin crew?

    82. Luiz Cunha

A seven hours flight time probably does not carry much fuel for a overweight landing. That's why they did not perform jettison fuel...

    83. David Northrup

After my wife heard about this she said that she didn't want to fly for a while. I told her that this makes me even more confident in air travel. After all a 2 engine plane had one blow apart while still climbing. A time when it still needed power. Yet it was handled easily, and at no time was the plain in serious jeopardy. To me this shows how well trained everyone involved is.

    84. M Milo

I would be so scared of the engine just falling off from burning that much. What would happen in that case? Does the plane lose its balance and stops it from flying stable?

    85. Satyajit Ganguly

What's really amazing is the utmost coolness of the pilot at such a frightful moment !!

    86. Tomas Sevilla

Question: Was the plane overweight for landing? Did it realease fuel to lower its weight?

    87. Oldplayers

Congratulations. I am Brazilian and I discovered today your channel. You have a clean English, talks slow, and it´s good for our comprehension

    92. Peter Parker

Did he say Moderate turbulence? I heard "wapwap".

    93. Ken-Jeeper

Interesting... i work at Pratt. Seems like these older engines need more frequent inspections.

    94. Clark Hull

I hope that they never ever end up having commercial airplanes be drones with the pilots in the ground a pilot really needs to be in the air so that he can monitor the situations have a good day bye-bye

    95. saultube44

Yes, 2 crew is necessary, maybe even 3 to check the systems, really good performance by the pilot, and exellent explanation by you

    96. Susan Muraguri

Wow!....I love your explanation....so easy for a layman to understand, thank you!....

Great explanation, factual and on key. I flew the 777 for 21 years at American as a Line CKA, over 17,000 hrs in type 200-300 great plane. Doodoo happens. Thats why we brief on every Takeoff, plan for an engine failure so there are no surprises. Every landing brief a Go Around that way again, No surprises. Look forward to following you.
